How we collaborate
Our art begins as a design collaboration based on sketches and many discussions. Selby usually makes the final line drawing from which Kathy works. She selects from the deeply pigmented fabrics that spill out of containers in her studio, and layers them to create the images. Using free-motion stitching, these shapes are sewn to a "sandwich" of background fabric, batting, and backing. Embellishment with a variety of colourful threads enhances the design elements and dye patterns of the mostly cotton fabrics, and an assortment of stitches are used to strengthen textural qualities. Different surface design techniques may also be applied to achieve the desired result.
